Halloween at 11A Gourley
While Halloween isn't actually celebrated
in New Zealand, it isn't far away from being adopted as an
annual event. Give kids a reason to dress up and scavenge for
candy and you've got an instant winner. Stores around the area
are starting to sell more Halloween paraphernalia and candy
companies
across the country are eager to promote it for profits. Of
course, some people hate this holiday as well. At a local
K-Mart, Jeannine and I saw signs you could stick in your lawn
with sayings such as, "Trick or Treaters NOT Welcome" and "Go
Away Trick or Treaters" When Jeannine and I commented aloud
with laughter at these signs, a woman behind us spoke up and
said nastily, "Well, it's not OUR holiday." Okay, then.
Anyways, not to be completely removed
from the traditions of home we decided to "force" our new
friends here to participate in some Halloween traditions. We
had fun carving pumpkins (Besides J and I, it was everyone's
first time. People were giving Jeannine looks at the grocery
store for the large size pumpkin she picked out.) and we even
got around to throwing a party. We had Dracula, Pirates, Dead
Rugby Fans, Fairies, Evil Ghouls, Witches, and one large
Spider. Truly impressive and I hope they had as much fun at
their first Halloween party as we did throwing it.
